Notes on the bench

Five explanations, ordered by the date they were published. Filter by the lesson they belong to. Without JavaScript the full list stays visible.

  1. Budget structure

What a Household Budget Actually Lists

A budget page is a list of named movements for a period that has not finished. The note separates that list from a verdict.

  2. Cash movement

Reading a Month of Cash Movement

Follow cash through one calendar month, including the awkward gap between a bill date and a pay date.

  3. Spending categories

Needs, Wants, and the Line Between Them

The familiar split is a label people contest. The note shows the contest without awarding a side.

  4. Buffers

Naming a Buffer Without a Goal

Slack and sinking amounts can be named. A target size cannot be supplied by this project.

  5. Sorting methods

    How Category Envelopes Sort Spending

Envelopes are bins. The note explains the sort, before or after the purchase, and stops there.

Order

How the line is ordered

The list runs from earlier to later in 2026. The order is editorial, not a curriculum you must finish. A filter hides rows in the browser only. Dates do not imply that a later note replaces an earlier one.

Before you read

These are educational courses, not financial services.

Apex explains household budgets, cash movement, and the words around them. Nothing here is advice, a product, or a service that manages money for you.
